HDR Career Week, day 3: fantastic day with three most interesting and inspiring workshops and a networking event to conclude the day.

The day began with an engaging workshop on connecting with industry during the PhD, followed by advice on how to engage with the media and a casual panel discussion on life as an academic.

Key lessons:

Don’t be naive about industry agendas, but don’t rule out engagement straight away.

There is power in quirkiness.

Be curious, follow your passion, recognise opportunities and collaborate!

HDR Career Week, day 2: Most interesting to learn about the academic job market, opportunities and application processes, including resume and cover letter composition. However, I cannot help but feeling a bit proud to find, that “An Office With A View—Airline Application” covers exactly the topics that are most relevant. Just comes to show: academia and the quest for the skies are not too dissimilar ✈️🎓

First class travel en route to Nathan campus for Higher Degree Research (HDR) Career Week, day 2 🤓

Kicked off the “Griffith University Higher Degree Research Career Week” with an inspiring presentation on the benefits of having a mentor and the difference between classic mentoring and a more contemporary approach. I certainly favour the latter where the relationship is based on the mutual learning experience and the provision of tools to reach a goal rather than being directed (not to say pushed) into a predetermined direction.
