Day 23 - what a s**t show!

Alice Springs

We woke up for our last cooked breakfast, as today was a day chilling at the park. The kids wanted to swim in the pool, go down the waterslide - like they did last time and use the buggy’s.

But first Alice came for a visit to see us before she had to work, it was great catching up with her and see how she likes living in Alice Springs. She walked with us to the pool before heading off to go get ready for work, the kids got their last play in the pool before heading back to cold SA. Jackson wanted to go down the slide so off I went with him, only one word came out of his mouth when we got off the slide “Again” so off we went again while Lilly watched from the pool. Jackson asked Lilly if she wanted to go down the slide but she wasn’t as keen, so it was Marks turn to take Jackson. He went down 4/5 times shivering like it was -6° every time he was out of the water, actually this kid will be one of those kids that shiver no matter how hot it is when he’s out of the water. Nan & Pop even went down the slide, Lilly and Levi were the only ones who didn’t. When Levi started to wake up we all got out and headed back to the van.

Jackson wanted to wear jocks and off he went to the playground after sitting him on the toilet. Mark then went off to grab the Buggy’s and while he was gone, s**t got hectic - literally. I was feeding Levi and Lilly was on the phone to Aunty Sarah, Mack and Seb when all of a sudden I looked over at Jackson who was riding some little boys tricycle. I didn’t think much of it until he turned around and that was when I was horrified. Jackson had actual s**t running down his legs and all over the bike seat. 😳 can you picture this: I cut Levi off and put him in the pram and pushed him towards Jackson to double check what I was seeing, sure enough I was right. With Lilly trying to give me the phone to talk, Levi screaming as I just pulled him off the food source and me apologising as I wheeled the bike over to clean it I would have looked like a crazy person. I hung up the phone, told Lilly to rock the pram - which didn’t happen, cleaned the bike off with camp kitchen detergent and water. Giving it back to the lady I apologised immensely, lucky she laughed and said not to worry - she was probably laughing at how much of a circus I looked like. Grabbing Jackson by the hand we went into the bathroom, taking his jocks off a sloppy lump of s**t plopped on the shower floor. Lilly started yelling at me to get the bird out of the bathroom, I left jackson screaming in the shower grabbed the pool noodle from under the pram to shoo the bird out. Getting it out the door a lady walked into the toilet and could see Lilly crying over the bird, Levi screaming cos he was hungry and jackson standing in the shower next to s**t and screaming. Thankfully she put Levi’s dummy in and gave him a rock while I started to clean the s**t off the floor and my sons bottom half of his body, all while dry reaching and trying not to throw up. Everything all clean I thanked the lady and we headed back to the caravan, jocks went in the bin and Jackson followed behind naked! As we got near the van, Nan & Pop arrived and then Mark turned the corner on the buggy, perfect timing for all of them to miss the circus act!

I finished feeding Levi to calm him down while Mark dressed Jackson, then it was buggy time. It was girls onto boys first, before Lilly swapped onto Marks buggy as he was going faster. It was a work out and my legs hurt, but I was in the winning buggy back to the caravan every time… I mean Mark always seemed to take the long way home haha 😂 we had them for an hour and after 20 minutes I was puffed. Half time rest with a zooper dooper and back at it before dropping them off back to the shed.

Mark went off to do some shopping and fuel up while I thought the kids would have a sleep after the big morning, boy was I wrong. No rest for the Wicked and when Mark got back both kids were belting out don’t cry by Guns and Roses. Once they settled down, we started to get ready to go out to the Gillen Club for tea which Alice recommended.

When we got there I could see why Alice said it would be good for the kids, it’s a pub for adults complete with a playground and jumping pillow for the kids. We sat in the outdoor area which would have been the size of the west side boat ramp car park. Meals were nice and the footy on the big screen was just an added bonus. We then headed back to the caravan and the kids jumped into bed, with out tears or a fuss and watched a movie in silence so they must have been puffed out.

Day 22 - trusty thongs

Alice Springs

Sunday is pancake day at the park, and when Mark looked at the line he said the whole park had come for breakfast. Pancake mix was in bucket loads literally and it wasn’t their first rodeo as they pulled out the trailer BBQ for the mammoth breakfast. Pancake toppings filled the camp kitchen, from sugar with lemon to Vegemite, jam and cream plus syrups galore, no topping was missed and the line wasn’t slowing as 10am neared.

With bellies full we head out to see Standley Chasm, Marks Parents decided to sit the morning out staying at the park. Making sure to have the baby carrier, we arrived at the start of the walk looking like true aussies in our finest walking footwear - the trusty thongs. 🩴 We headed off down the walkway and to our surprise 2 women walked towards us in heels, 🤔 everyone else though was to the nines in walking gear, shoes, backpacks and some had walking sticks. We made the 1.2km walk with Lilly in the lead while mark looked like a pack horse, Levi in front and Jackson on his shoulders - doing wonders for his hip I’m sure. Lilly being the coordinated baby giraffe that she is managed to fall over not 1 but 3 of the rocks that lined the floor of the chasm. We then took some happy snaps, again having to get a selfie for a family photo, we can’t have someone take a family photo for us cos our children are feral and never want a photo until they are in everyone’s way. 🙄 we made our way back to the car with the linger of a septic tank smell thanks to Jackson’s arse!

Clean bums and we headed back into Alice, we got back to the caravan park and I was secretly excited as Mark got the roast ready to put into the baby Q. So excited in fact that I went a bit crazy, I done washing, re-packed and sorted the clothes bags and cooked the Cauli and broccoli bake early AF! Lilly and Jackson made more friends at the playground, playing chasey and some weird monkey game that made them both look like they couldn’t communicate with humans. 🐒

As the sun set over the park, our tea filled the air with the aroma of charcoal cooked meat. Hungry bellies filled our caravan site and smiles all around as the adults looked forward to some veggies, Lilly and Jackson excited for meat and me well I’ll do pretty much anything for a roast so I was like a fat kid on cake - all over it! 😍 the kids went old school for movie night tonight watching a movie at the drive in.

When bedtime came so did the waterworks, we gave Jackson the option the stay with Nan & Pop for the night which he declined- stupid boy! After settling the kids Mark went for a shower, Levi started to cry going inside to investigate I found Jackson sitting on him holding his white noise, with a smack and telling him he can’t sit on his brother, Jackson’s was put back to bed. That’s when his Australian tour “The Inconsolable Child”started, Cry by the Mavis’s was top of the list sung with a sniffle pause. By the time mark got back from the shower both Jackson and Lilly were midway through singing the encore No tears left to cry by Ariana Grande. Going inside he calm them both down and put them both to sleep. While Levi slept peacefully with a front row seat in the bassinet amongst the ruckus.

Day 21 - Our kids are a broken record 💿

Banka Banka - Alice Springs

Levi is going into hibernation as we get closer to the cooler weather. Demanding to be fed every 3 hours, normally it’s only one feed around 6am but not last night. We packed the van and set off 10 mins after Marks parents, on the road to Alice Springs.

The road trip was smooth sailing and I was skeptical the car ride would be like this all the way to Alice Springs. We kept the kids amused for a long as possible before iPads came out, do you know how hard it is playing eye spy with people who can’t spell, 🤦🏻‍♀️ blue sky doesn’t start with P.

We made it to lunch with minimal tears, lunch however was a totally different scenario. It was like monkeys on steroids, we had no idea what the kids were saying, nobody seemed to understand English and the crying started. Fritz and sauce sandwiches wasn’t a popular choice for lunch 🤷🏻‍♀️ what’s wrong with our children! Jackson suddenly broke out with Hootie and the blowfish’s rendition of let her cry, complete with a floor routine that didn’t impress dad. Continuing with his antics and not eating lunch was the last straw for Mark, and with that Jackson was banished to the car. With the concert in full swing inside the car, we sat listening to the muffled songs from inside the caravan threatening Lilly she too would end up in the car if she didn’t eat lunch.

Back on the road the concert continued from our adorable children in the back seat. All 3 in tune like the Australian symphony orchestra, once we hit 100km/hour Levi passed out. It wasn’t long before Jackson’s rug slowly covered his face and Lilly’s eyes got heavy that they both fell asleep, stress levels on mark declined to a healthy zero. The cars aura was back to a happy sun yellow, as we drove in silence.

15km out of Alice we hit some road works, as the car slowed the baby T-Rex in the capsule stared to stir. Coming to a holt waiting to be allowed through the 1 lane section the stir in the back soon became a cry, before anyone could save the silence the baby T-Rex transformed into the mother of all dinosaurs letting out a lovely loud roar! 15 minutes went by with the roar in the back still going mark was ready to jump out and see what was taking so long, all of a sudden over the horizon came the lead car. The car moving once again the roar became a stir then silence, Jackson and Lilly must have been puffed or their rugs must have been noise proof as nobody moved a muscle during Jurassic park 5 - the stopped car.

We made our way into Alice Springs and back to the caravan park we stayed before. The kids got out and burnt some energy on the playground while the parents set up the caravan. We cooked tea and relaxed while the kids watched a movie and chilled out, showers were needed as everyone smelled like s**t. Then my favourite part of the day, bedtime which normally coincides with a concert or 2, but tonight was not the case! Lilly went for a sleep over in Nan & Pops caravan house and Jackson fell asleep pretty much instantly. Levi took some convincing and full up on milk he soon passed out for the night.

Day 20 - On the road again…..

Katherine - Banka Banka

It must have been Cooler weather because Levi was up every 2 hours just looking for his dummy… not fun at all. When I woke mark had packed pretty much everything up, I dressed the kids and we set off on the road.

Well there isn’t really much to say about the drive to Banka Banka, my mum told me if you have nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all. So I’ll quickly outline the highlights of our drive.

Leaving at 9:30 It didn’t take long before everyone cottoned on this was a big day of driving, Levi passed out taking the much quieter route than his brother who started the concert way too early for my linking. Cry in shame by Johnny deisel & the injectors was Jacksons song of choice for the day and when I say day I mean the whole f*king day! 🖕🏼 my alter ego… cun+ face McCun+¥ arrived and she was in full swing, throwing daggers left right and centre, more aiming at Lilly once she started poking Levi and waking him up 100km’s out of Banka Banka. Marks headache grew the longer Jackson’s concert went and my attitude stayed, although he didn’t say anything to me as he would have lost his head! Whatever!

Once we arrived at Banka Banka Station though everyone was cool, calm and collected. No screaming from anyone, cun+ face McCun+¥ left and everything in the world was right again. Parked up next to Mark’s parents we settled in for the night, cooked some marshmallows and sent everyone to bed.

The moral of today is: don’t travel consecutive long days in the car with kids under 5. They have IPads but we don’t want them to be zombies when they get out so only limited time on them suckers. The saddest part is that isn’t even our biggest day of travel… we have another 3 to go with our biggest being Alice Springs to Coober Pedy so when that day comes please lord give us strength 🙏

Day 19 - never smile at a crocodile

Darwin - Katherine

We woke up and started packing up when our last visitors of the trip called past for a quick hello before heading off to work, the visit was more for Levi and the kids we are just the package that they come with. Julie and Mick Kartinyeri got out the car and before the kids could run off Julie had them in her arms for kisses and cuddles! We stopped for a quick chat and catch up before they headed off to work, while mark continued to pack up I took the kids for a walk to say goodbye to Aunty Amie as she was getting on a plane to go back to the cold and windy SA.

We hooked up the caravan, Jackson checked to make sure the caravan was coming and we were off. On our way to Katherine but first we stopped in to see the Adelaide River Cruises - Jumping Crocodile Experience. Only a 50 minute drive south east of Darwin and we turned off the bitumen and drove down a dirt road to the Adelaide river croc jumping. With 5 minutes to spare we arrived, checked in and jumped on the boat. We drove about 10 meters away from the pontoon and seen our first crocodile. Heading down stream we found big Brutus with only 3 legs and we got up real close and personal. So close that we could touch him. I mean if he couldn’t kill you you would have touched him. Mark got some great pics of Brutus from front on, we then made our way back up stream and found a crocodile named Lilly. Our Lilly took some interesting photos of her animal self, then we kept on going looking for the dominator, he didn’t look as big as Brutus but he was the biggest known crocodile in the Adelaide river. He was longer than Brutus but much younger so he was thinner and much more muscle, kind of like an old Arnold Schwarzenegger compared to the younger body builder one. After getting back on dry land we realised the tour went for about 1.5 hours, we fully recommend doing it if you’re in the area. We seen so many crocodiles, got some great insight into how they live out there and we found out why they have extra rails high up on the boat, they really can jump!

Getting into the car with the good old trusty zooper doopers to cool everyone down. We headed back to the Stuart highway to make our way to Katherine.

The drive to Katherine was a peaceful one. Both boys fast asleep and Lilly kept herself amused. We kept the caravan unpacking to a minimum . Only here for one night so the less to pack up tomorrow the better. Nan and Pop found us and came round for tea. We kept the kids amused until it was time to calm down, so inside for a movie before bed. We stayed up for a few drinks before Nan and Pop jumped into their car and drove back to their van we cleaned up from tea and Went to bed, early day again tomorrow.

Day 18 - Change of plans..

Darwin

We were woken from our deep sleep by Lilly who needed to wee and decided this morning she needed help. Today we should have been packing to head towards Katherine for the night, but we decided on an itinerary change as corona cut us short in Darwin. So instead of packing up we got ready to take the kids to Crocosaurus Cove Darwin.

We jumped into the car and headed to the home maker centre to grab a longer gas connection for the Baby Q and a new fishing shirt for Jackson, we then drove into town and made our way to crocasurus cove. We entered via the dark cave and came to the underwater viewing area for some of the crocodile pools. We then made our way to the aquarium to see the barramundi that would have easily been the size of Jackson if not bigger. Walking up to the top level we entered the reptile hall, as we walked through one of the handlers grabbed a snake. As we walked around she came out the door and said that she was taking the snake over to the emporium to feed the snake and talk about it. Thinking it might be cool for the kids to see, we headed over to check it out but once the snake had attacked the rat the kids lost interest so we moved on. We then went into the crocodile museum, the lady came over with a baby crocodile and just like crocadylis park I thought no one would touch it. Well I was wrong both Lilly and Jackson held it and we couldn’t get a photo, as the park have professional ones. so I said to the kids we would get photos taken but they had both had their hold and they were over it - missed opportunity at it’s best😡

We grabbed some lunch and headed back to the caravan park for a swim. The water was refreshing and even warm enough for Levi to stay in longer than 10 minutes. Once everyone’s hands looked like Nana Rene we got out and headed back to the caravan to get dressed for tea.

Our last night in Darwin and we headed off the the Darwin Ski Club NTWSA for tea with the Corey’s. Such a beautiful spot with the beach as the backdrop. The sun was setting giving up a spectacular array of burnt oranges, yellows with a touch of pinks and purples. After tea we sat back in the relaxed setting talking away with drinks in hand, before we knew it last drinks was called! Saying our final goodbyes we got into the car and made our way back to the van for one last time. No crying children when we got back to the van which was surprising as the kids were all puffed out! Everyone went to bed ready to pack and get on the road heading for home tomorrow.

Day 17 - How not to launch a boat!

Darwin

Up early, dressed and picked up Pop all by 8:30am, we headed off to meet up with everyone to head out to Gunn Point Beach. Ramon, Naomi and their kids in the lead car we all followed behind. We went passed the Gunn Point beach turn off and went off road, Ramon took us to a little creek so we could try to get some mud crabs, try some fishing and let the kids ride the motorbikes. Changing the car into low4 we had a little taste of the NT 4WD scene….. few more trees to dodge than back home but getting onto the beach we made our way to the side of the creek. Although Ramon has never seen a croc here I wasn’t going to risk it, as tempting as it was to throw Jackson in… I didn’t! We set up camp for the day and threw the crab nets out. Jackson was in his element, with a fishing rod in hand he walked down the steep creek bed to go fishing. Mark followed and lucky he did because I don’t think Jackson would have stopped. Wayan got the motorbike ready and the girls were off, we hadn’t been there long when what looked like Pop king dog’s car arriving with a dinghy. Out jumped an old man to suss out the steep creek bank, surely he wasn’t going to launch his boat into the creek alone. Being the nice guy he is Jack Reid asked him if he needed a hand, getting the silent treatment he quickly returned to our site. We continued to fish, catching nothing but our lures waiting for this man to launch the boat while Mark Irvine cooked snags for lunch. A good 2 hours passed, Naomi and Mark were the only ones to catch any fish, we had 2 mud crabs and 1 net that had a massive hole otherwise we would have had 3. Finally a second car pulled up and out jumped another man, they got busy getting the boat ready to launch… all eyes watched wondering if it would work. The tide had come in but it was still steep, phones in hands I secretly wanted to video a massive f*k up and a sinking dinghy but that wasn’t the case. However the launch did look pretty fu**ed, at one stage the dinghy was nearly vertical. It had been a big day, getting up early and the kids were busy all day at the creek. So we packed the kids into the car said goodbye to everyone and set off back to the caravan park.

Emma, Tracey and Hudson were coming to the park for tea, and the Indonesian food van was at the park tonight, so we decided that might be good. However the sign said Wednesday and we didn’t think anything of it, until Lilly and I went to have a shower I didn’t see any van setting up, then I realised it was only Tuesday.🤦🏻‍♀️ so once Lilly and I got back from our shower (Lilly used the caravan park transport - the scooter) we decided to have chicken wings and pizzas. The girls arrived with Hudson, beers, red wine and icecream for sweets. The kids played on the scooter and bikes while
Hudson and Levi caught up on the daily baby chit chat before both being rocked to sleep in the pram - well we tried. Home time was on the cards, we said our goodbyes before we sent the kids to bed. Quick clean up before heading off to bed ourselves, here’s hoping for a solid sleep tonight
