The Honourable Minister of Communication and Digital Economy of The Gambia today held a bilateral meeting with his Ugandan counterpart to strengthen cooperation in the postal sector.

The discussions focused on partnership as a catalyst for institutional growth and modernization. A key outcome of the meeting was Uganda’s commitment to work closely with The Gambia’s regulator, PURA, in sharing experience on postal regulation. Both sides also agreed to deepen collaboration in the development of postal services, with a view to improving service delivery, expanding digital solutions, and enhancing operational efficiency.

The Honourable Minister emphasized that cooperation of this kind is vital in building resilient institutions, fostering innovation, and ensuring that postal services adapt to the demands of the digital age.

This engagement underscores The Gambia’s commitment to meaningful partnerships within Africa and reaffirms the importance of South–South cooperation in advancing postal service development and sustainable growth across the continent.

The Gambian delegation, headed by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, today met with the British delegation on the margins of the ongoing Universal Postal Congress. The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on deepening cooperation in the postal and digital sectors.

Central to the discussions was the movement of consignments within and across borders, with both delegations recognizing the importance of investing in modern delivery vehicles and logistics infrastructure to improve efficiency and reliability.

The Honourable Minister also underscored The Gambia’s priority in capacity building, particularly in the fields of technology and regulation. In this regard, Public Utility Regulatory Authority(PURA) and the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy(MoCDE) continue to advance reforms aimed at strengthening oversight and modernization of the postal sector.

At the broader Congress sessions, delegates engaged in debates on postal charges, with emphasis placed on the need to harmonise tariffs at least at the regional level. Looking forward, e-commerce is set to feature prominently before the conclusion of the Congress, reflecting its transformative role in global postal development.

This high-level engagement reflects The Gambia’s firm commitment to building strategic international partnerships that will foster innovation, enhance regulatory frameworks, and drive sustainable growth in the postal sector.

The Gambia made its presence felt at the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai, where the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Mr. Lamin Jabbie, led the country’s delegation and delivered a statement on behalf of the nation.

In his address, Minister Jabbie aligned The Gambia’s vision with the Congress theme, “Leading the Change, Creating the Future.” He spoke about the urgent need for postal services to embrace digital innovation while staying true to their role of connecting people, communities, and businesses.

Highlighting the country’s own journey, the Minister explained that The Gambia is steadily transforming its postal sector to meet modern demands, shifting from traditional mail services to digital platforms that support e-commerce, financial inclusion, and trade facilitation. He emphasized that this transformation is not just about technology, but also about creating opportunities for young people, empowering communities, and ensuring that no one is left behind.

The Congress, which gathered leaders and experts from all over the world, offered a platform for The Gambia to share its progress while learning from global best practices.
